3rd Jean Monnet Students' Sports Law Conference
On December 11, 2023 the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law – Sports Law, Sports Policy and Sports Diplomacy Centre with its Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy (Croatia) and Edge Hill University – Centre for Sports Law Research with its Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law & Policy (UK) organised the third edition of the international sports law students mini conference, named as Jean Monnet Conference.
We are very proud of our student Iva Josipović who presented a paper on Anti-discrimination law and sport, and our Erasmus + students who have presented their papers also in the name of our Faculty. Ádila Carolina Magalhães presented the paper on Sports Negligence, Mariana Mendes Ávila Costa on Sports Stadium Issues (both from University in Porto, Portugal) while Nils Schmidt (Universität Siegen, Germany) presented a paper on Sport and Criminal Law in Germany. They are all enrolled at the course EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy at the Integrated study program of law.

A workshop was held on the social status of athletes in Olympic sports
On Tuesday, 21 November 2023, a workshop on the social status of athletes in Olympic sports was held at the headquarters of the Croatian Volleyball Federation in Zagreb. The workshop was organised by the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law and its Centre for Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy - the head of the centre and regional coordinator of the project, assoc. prof. Vanja Smokvina.
This is one of the project activities of the Erasmus + Sport project „SOPROS“, in which participated Tomislav Družak, State Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Republic of Croatia; Josipa Klišanin, Head of the Labour Sector at the Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy of the Republic of Croatia; Biserka Vrbek, prof. Romana Caput Jogunica and Snježana Pejčić on behalf of the Croatian Olympic Committee along with Blanka Vlašić, President of the NOC of CRoatia Athletes' Commission; Frane Žanić, President and Valentina Bifflin, Director of the Croatian Volleyball Federation; Zoran Primorac, President of the Croatian Table Tennis Federation; Luka Jakovčev on behalf of the Croatian Water Polo Federation; athlete Bruno Erent on behalf of the Croatian Athletics Federation; Mario Jurić, President of the Croatian "Football Union"; Marija Anzulović on behalf of the Croatian Olympic Club; Suzana Šop, Secretary General of the Sports Association of the City of Zagreb and Katja Luketić, Secretary of the Sports Association of Primorje - Gorski Kotar County.
International Event on Sports Diplomacy in Dubrovnik, 23-24/10/2023
Organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Republic of Croatia and in cooperation with the Centre for Sports Law, Sports Policy and Sports Diplomacy and the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, an international conference and workshop for representatives of the EU-27 Member States on sports diplomacy was held in Dubrovnik on 23-24 October 2023.
One of the co-organisers of the event was assoc. prof. Vanja Smokvina, who, together with external members of the Centre and the Jean Monnet Chair, prof. Richard Parrish (Edge Hill University, UK), prof. Carmen Perez Gonzalez (UC3 Madrid, Spain) and dr. Simon Rofe (University of Leeds, UK) took part in the event.
Program
The tenth Introduction to the Study of Italian Law course has just ended
The tenth Introduction to the Study of Italian Law course was held from 16 to 19 October 2023.
On the premises of the Italian community, in the Palazzo Modello, the course began on Monday with the first lecture of this edition (Prof. Francesco Deana - University of Udine).
Over the next three days, the course continued at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka. Prof. Stefano Deplano (University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli), Prof. Federica Mucci and Prof. Elisabetta Corapi (both from the University of Rome 'Tor Vergata') gave us excellent lectures on very interesting topics on the protection of minority rights, as well as on sustainability in private and financial law.
In addition to our speakers, great thanks go to the Italian Union, which has been financially supporting this course for years, and to the Consulate General of the Italian Republic in Rijeka.
But the greatest thanks go to our participants, who for ten years have repeatedly shown great interest in this lifelong learning course and without whom this successful course would not exist!

5th Edition of the UEFA Football Law Program launched
In the first week of October 2023, the first session of the prestigious 10 ECTS credits lifelong learning programme organised by UEFA was held at Kadir Has University (Istanbul - Turkey). This is an educational programme in the field of sports law in football, aimed at prominent legal experts with many years of experience from European and worldwide football federations and clubs, footballers' trade unions and renowned law firms dealing with the representation of players or clubs.
A conference was held on history, law and diplomacy in relation to football
On Friday, 8 September 2023, a scientific and professional conference on the historical, legal and diplomatic aspects of football was held at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the first football match on the territory of the Republic of Croatia - 1873 in Rijeka; 110 years since the first match on Kantrida Stadium between Viktoria and Građanski - 1913, 100 years since the first match on Krimeji Stadium between Orient and HAŠK - 1923, and 25 years since the historic bronze medal of the men's football team at the FIFA World Cup in France - 1998.
Jean Monnet Summer School 2023
The Jean Monnet Summer School of EU Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy was held from 5 to 7 September 2023 during the 7th Rijeka Days of Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy. The event was organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia and with the support of the European Commission Representation in the Republic of Croatia. It is an accredited lifelong learning programme of the University of Rijeka with 4 ECTS credits and 22 hours of lectures in the field of EU sports law, policies and sports diplomacy. The summer school was held exclusively online.

Jurgen Mittag & Loren Fiege (German Sport University, Germany); assoc. prof. dr. Vanja Smokvina (Faculty of Law in Rijeka); dr. Andrea Cattaneo (Edge Hill University, UK); dr.
