Darja Lončarar Dušanović defended her doctoral dissertation
On 24 March 2021, Darja Lončar Dušanović, doctoral candidate at the Postgraduate doctoral study in the field of social sciences, the subject of law of the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law and data protection officer at the major Croatian telecommunication company, defended her doctoral dissertation titled “Back to Bases: Overcoming Legal Uncertainty in Personal Data Processing in the EU”, written under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ivana Kunda. As noted by the Defence Committee consisting of Prof. Dr. Marko Šikić, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Law, Assist. Prof. Dr. Petra Weingerl, University of Maribor, Faculty of Law and Assist. Prof. Dr. Danijela Vrbljanac, University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law, novelty in her approach is in adopting the perspective of metavalue of legal certainty.
Faculty of Law again partner in a new Erasmus + sport project – Project Employs
In January 2021 a new Erasmus + sport project named Understanding, Evaluating, and Improving Good Governance in the Employment Relations of Athletes in Olympic Sports in Europe (Employs) has started. The Faculty of Law in Rijeka is a partner in the project and is represented by Assist. Prof. Vanja Smokvina. The Project is led by Deutsche Sporthohlschule Köln (Head, Professor Jürgen Mittag), while other partners are Universidade Europeia (Portugal), Edge Hill University (UK), Institute for Sport Governance (Poland) and athletes’ representatives: European Elite Athletes Association (EU Athletes) and European Olympic Academies. It is a two years collaborative partnership project.
This collaborative partnership aims at improving good governance in the employment relations of athletes in Olympic sports in EU-27 Member States + Norway and UK. The Project is providing, evaluating and sharing evidence based information, practices and recommendations in an important, yet largely neglected, subdomain of sport and governance connected to sportspersons in the Olympic sports.

The defence of doctoral dissertation written by Anna-Lena Hoffmann
On 26 February 2021, doctoral candidate Anna-Lena Hoffmann defended her doctoral thesis titled “Die datenschutzrechtliche Einwilligung im Gesundheitsbereich unter der DSGVO: Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der datenschutzrechtlichen Vorgaben in Deutschland” (“The Consent on Data Protection in the Health Sector under the GDPR: With Special Emphasis on the Data Protection Legislation in Germany”), under the mentorship of Professor Dr. Gerald G. Sander Sander, University of Applied Sciences – Public Administration and Finance Ludwigsburg, and Associate Professor Dr. Emilia Mišćenić, University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law.
European Law Clinic students participated in the European Parliament seminar
On 25 February 2021, the students enrolled in the European Law Clinic at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka participated in the European Youth Seminar organised by the European Parliament. This was the occasion to repeat some of the functions of the Parliament, but the core activity was work in three smaller groups. On topics of 1. Digitalisation, social media and democracy, 2. Green transformation and 3. Human rights, they discussed the European Union policies and worked out their own ideas which they presented before the Member of European Parliament Karlo Ressler. This two-hour activity wraps up this year’s European Law Clinic. Despite epidemiological measures the Clinic provided students with the continuous exposure to practice, including thought meetings with gust lecturers of various legal professions: judges, attorneys, state attorneys, in-house lawyers.

On the occasion of the Book Month, we would like to invite you to visit our virtual exhibition
“The Life and Work of Professor Petar Simonetti”
The virtual exhibition was created in cooperation with the scientific and teaching staff of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, Assist. Prof. Ivo Tuhtan-Grgic, Prof. Maja Bukovac Puvača, Head of the Library Dejana Golenko, Ph.D., librarian Martina Grlica and student Lucija Baljak.
This exhibition shows scientific publications by renown legal academic and expert Petar Simonetti, Professor of Civil Law at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, Judge of the Supreme Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina and founder and a long-time president of the Poreč Lawyers Conference Ownership – Obligations – Procedure, organized by the Faculty of Law in Rijeka which today bears his name.
The virtual exhibition includes three themes: Life and Work, Scientific Opus and Book Collection.
New project on energy transition commenced
We kicked-off yet another project at the Rijeka Law Faculty, this time within the University of Camerino-led collaboration with total of 43 academic members and professionals from around the world. Gathered around the idea of "Enabling Consumer to become Prosumer in the Energy Transition Era – ECPE", Professor Ivana Kunda and Assistant Professor Sandra Winkler will take part in researching prosumer phenomenon and regulatory barriers to their involvement in developing sustainable energy practices.
