Conference on organisation of football in Europe, held in Luxembourg 21-02-2023
The Faculty of Law was a partner of an important international conference called "The economic and legal aspects of organization of football in Europe" which was held in Luxembourg on February 21, 2023. At the conference the participants discussed the legal and economic aspects of the football system in Europe, with special emphasis on recent developments about the European Football Super League and the legal proceedings being conducted before the European Court in Luxembourg. The organizers were CDES - Center for Law and Economics of Sport from Limoges, France and the University of Luxembourg. Together with our Faculty, the partners were the University of Limoges, France; University College of Northern Denmark, Denmark; Sport&EU Association and IASE – International Association of Economists in Sport.

New book published
In December 2022, the book, as a printed and as an e-book, entitled Good Governance in the Employment Relations of Athletes in Olympic Sports in Europe: Understanding - Evaluating – Improving was published by the Faculty of Law in Rijeka in the edition of the Center for Sports Law, Sports Policy and Sports Diplomacy.
It is the final study on the employment relations of athletes in Olympic sports in 29 European countries (EU-27 + Norway and UK) conducted within the Erasmus + sport project Understanding, Evaluating, and Improving Good Governance in the Employment Relations of Athletes in Olympic Sports in Europe – EMPLOYS. Authors of the book, in addition to Associate Professor Vanja Smokvina are Professor Jürgen Mittag, Maximilian Seltmann and Lorenz Fiege (German Sport University Cologne, Germany), dr. Leanne O'Leary (Edge Hill University, UK), dr. Pawel Zembura (Institute for Sport Governance, Poland), dr. Luiz Haas and Thiago Santos (Universidade Europeia, Portugal). Also, partners to the Project and co-authors are Paulina Tomczyk who represents the European Elite Athletes Association (EU Athletes) together with Professor Manfred Laemmer and Sönke Schadwinkel, representing Olympics Academies.
Event on the football Superealgue and the ISU Case at the Faculty of Law
On Monday, December 19, 2022 the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law, through the Center for Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy and the Jean Monnet Chair for EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy, in cooperation with the prestigious association of sports experts Sport&EU Association, organized a Round Table and debate about opinions of the Advocate General in the cases European Superleague (C-333/21) and International Skating Union (C-124/21 P), which are pending before the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The Event was of high interest due to the fact that the opinions have been published on December 15, 2022. The final decision of the Court will be published in the spring of 2023.
The meeting was opened by the dean of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, prof. Vesna Crnić-Grotić and Dr. Borja Garcia Gracia from Loughborough University – UK, Executive Director of the Sport&EU Association.
Students Sports Law Conference, 13-12-2022
On December 13, 2022 the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law – Sports Law, Sports Policy and Sports Diplomacy Centre with its Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy (Croatia) and Edge Hill University – Centre for Sports Law Research with its Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law & Policy (UK) have organised an international sports law students mini conference, named as Jean Monnet Conference.
We are very proud of our students: Eleonora Petković who presented the paper Anti-discrimination law and sport in Croatia & the Netherlands and Haris Džin who presented the paper Assessment of how sports disputes are resolved in Croatia. Furthermore, we are especially proud of our YUFE student Eirini Chrysovalanti Mandani (University of Maastricht) who presented the paper Assessment of how sports disputes are resolved in Greece also as PRAVRI student since this academic year she is a student of the Sports Law class thanks to YUFE virtual mobility.
A Roundtable on the European model of sports was held at the Faculty of Law
On Friday, December 2, 2022, a roundtable on the "European model of sport" was held in person & online at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka. The event was organized by the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law through the Centre for Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy and the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy with the support of the Jean Monnet Interuniversity Centre of Excellence from Opatija - Croatia, Loughborough University from the UK and the Association for Sport&EU.
The event was held under the auspices of the Government of the Republic of Croatia through the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, while the Representation of the European Commission in the Republic of Croatia also supported the event. In the introductory part, besides the hosts of the meeting, Associate Professor Vanja Smokvina (University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law) and Dr. Borja Garcia Garcia (Loughborough University, UK), the attendees were addressed by the vice-rector of the University of Rijeka, Professor Marta Žuvić; the State Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Tomislav Družak and the Head of the Representation of the European Commission in the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Ognian Zlatev.
Rijeka Doctoral Conference – RIDOC 2022, 8 and 9 December 2022, Faculty of Law in Rijeka and online
Fifth edition of Rijeka Doctoral Conference - RIDOC 2022 will be held on 8 and 9 December 2022 in a hybrid form, at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka and via the Zoom platform. RIDOC is intended for doctoral candidates who wish to present and test their preliminary research findings in front of a panel of distinguished legal experts, as well as discuss these findings with their colleagues at an international level. This year's conference includes a record number of doctoral candidates and a handful of interesting topics.

New book published by the member of our staff
The prestigious international publishing house Wolters Kluwer has published the second amended and supplemented edition of the book Sports Law in Croatia, written by our Assoc. Prof. Vanja Smokvina. The book provides an overview of the sports system in the Republic of Croatia with a special focus on the legal framework with theoretical and practical views on specific legal issues.
