Jean Monnet Conference 2023

On Monday 4 September 2023, the Jean Monnet Conference marked the beginning of the traditional event of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, the 7th Rijeka Days of Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy. The event was organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia and with the support of the European Commission Representation in the Republic of Croatia. In the introductory part, the attendees were addressed by Josip Pavić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, Andrea Čović Vidović, Acting Head of the European Commission Representation to the Republic of Croatia, prof. dr. Vesna Crnić-Grotić, Dean of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, and assoc. prof. dr. Vanja Smokvina in front of the organisers of the Centre for Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy and the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka.

After the keynote speech by prof. dr. Richard Parrish (Edge Hill University, UK) on CJEU and sports (football) law cases, two panels and a round table took place.

The first panel on Football agents was attended by Luis Villas-Boas Pires (Head of Agents at FIFA, Switzerland) and dr. Roberto Branco Martins (European Football Agents Association - EFAA and University of Amsterdam, Netherlands), while the moderator was prof. dr Richard Parrish (Edge Hill University, UK). In the second panel on Sport Diplomacy – recent developments participated dr. Simon Rofe (University of Leeds, UK), Gavin Price (European Director, Sports Diplomacy Alliance Wales - UK; Bond University, Australia) and assoc. prof. dr. Vanja Smokvina (University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law). The event concluded with a round table on the legal, political and economic aspects of the European model of sport, with the participation of prof. dr. Carmen Perez Gonzalez (UC3 Madrid, Spain), prof. dr. Juergen Mittag (Sport University Cologne, Germany), prof. dr. Jean Francois Brocard (CDES & University of Limoges, France) and prof. dr. Tomislav Globan (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Economics).

This event is held in conjunction with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of law studies in Rijeka and the 50th anniversary of the University of Rijeka. The partners are the Sport&EU Association, the Centre de Droit et d'Economie du Sport from France and Edge Hill University from the UK.

This conference is held as one of the activities of the EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy Jean Monnet Chair.
