The Jean Monnet EU Summer School on Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy has ended
In September and October 2022, the Faculty of Law in Rijeka hosted the Jean Monnet EU Sports Law, Policy & Diplomacy Rijeka Summer School, an accredited lifelong learning programme with 4 ECTS credits. About fifty participants from all over the world attended the Summer School, which was held in a hybrid format and under the auspices of the Representation of the European Commission in the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Republic of Croatia.
The programme started on September 5, 2022 with the opening remarks of H.E. Ognian Zlatev, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in the Republic of Croatia; Dr. Martina Jeričević, Head of the Department for Sports System Support of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia; Rector of the University of Rijeka, Prof. Dr. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sandra Winkler on behalf of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanja Smokvina on behalf of the Centre for Sports Law, Sports Policies and Sports Diplomacy and the Jean Monnet Chair for EU Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, who are organising the Summer School together with the Sport&EU Association. This was followed by the lecture of Prof. Dr. Richard Parrish (Edge Hill University, UK) entitled "The Preservation of the European Model of Sport". The second lecture was held online on September 12, 2022, and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Mittag, Maximilian Seltmann, and Lorenz Fiege (German Sports University, Germany) spoke on "Employment and Social Relations of Athletes in Olympic Sports: European Perspectives and Good Governance." The third lecture, delivered online on September 20, 2022, by Dr. Andrea Cattaneo (Edge Hill University, UK), was titled "EU Competition Law and Sport" and on October 3, 2022, Dr. David McArdle (Stirling University, UK) delivered an in-person and online lecture on "Disciplinary Tribunals and Human Rights: What Lessons for Sport from Strasbourg?". This was followed by an online lecture by Prof. Dr. Carmen Perez Gonzalez (University of Carlos III Madrid, Spain), also on human rights in sport, entitled "Sport and Human Rights in International and European Law". On the last day of the Summer School, October 7, 2022, the first online lecture entitled "Sports Diplomacy: Concept and Practise" was given by Dr. Simon Rofe (University of Leeds, UK), and everything was rounded off by a lecture given in person and online by Dr. Borja Garcia Garcia (Loughborough University, UK), entitled "European Union Sports Policy and the Governance of Sport".
