International Conference on Sport Diplomacy held in Zagreb, June 12th 2019

On June 12th 2019 in Zagreb our Faculty co-organised an international conference titled „Sport Diplomacy – Examples of Good Practice“ with the Central State Office for Sports of the Republic of Croatia and with the support of the Croatian Football Federation. The conference was organised as the first event within the Erasmus + project Promoting a Strategic Approach to EU Sport Diplomacy, in which the Faculty is one of the partners.

After the Project was presented by Professor Carmen Perez-Gonzalez (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain) the keynote speaker with the topic „Sport Diplomacy“ was Professor Stuart Murray (Bond University, Australia). After that presentation, Professor Thierry Zintz  (Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium) gave a presentation on the “EU High Level Group on Sport Diplomacy”, Ms. Silvija Mitevska (TAKT, North Macedonia) presented the  “US Model of Sport Diplomacy” while Dr. Martina Jeričević (Central State Office for Sports of the Republic of Croatia) presented the “The Croatian National Sports Program with Sport Diplomacy as one of its measures”. The session was concluded by Mr. Zdravko Marić who presented the project “Youth Sport Games (Sportske igre mladih)”.

In the next session eminent diplomats took part in the discussion about developing of new models of Sport Diplomacy, H.E. Elizabeth Petrovic – Australian Ambassador to Croatia, Mr. Kazumasa MIYAZAKI, charge d´affaires, Embassy of Japan in Croatia,  Ms. Nikolina Paić, U.S. Embassy in Croatia and Ms. Katja Šare, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

The last session was titled Sports Stakeholders and Diplomacy – football as a model. In the session participated Mr. Dario Šimić (FIFA France ’98 bronze medal and president of the Croatian Football Players Trade Union) with The role of athletes in the promotion of the country worldwide and European Parliament initiatives; Ms. Ivančica Sudac (Croatian Football Federation) with The importance of football in the promotion of the Republic of Croatian in the world and with examples of cooperation and good practice between European and non-European football federations and Mr. Marko Babić (Croatian Chamber of Economy) with The impact of the sport successes in the promotion of the Republic of Croatia.
